City Arithmetic
Remember that July
night when we counted
our wishes, picked
the best buds
and prayed they would
blossom in the warm
Savannah air?
It was a problem
of mathematics, too
many numbers on
River Street vying
for a seat at our
table, wanting
our cheeks. Magnolias
bloomed on every
ceramic in the gift
shop, in every dream.
Like Sherman,
we divided.
Some things are too
beautiful to burn.
