Blue Jay in April
This one’s neck
skinny like someone
tried choking him
for supper
then realized
he wasn’t a chicken
tail fuzz still evident,
body ballooned around
scrawny parts.
Too stubborn
to know he’s ugly,
our hero hammers
every seed on the tray
for the best bride
of the year,
her eyes greedy
beak already open
to receive his gifts.
