A Steinway
weighs as much
as an elephant.
How many elephants
for eighty-eight ivories,
white and black =
the gray whir
of hotel rooms, courteous
darkness between the lamps
miniature bars of Ivory soap
or just bars, refills familiar
as finger exercises
and others without
faces, the high-dollar coughers
restless in their seats?
